Overview
Sunday Market is a fictional weekly market of growers, bakers and street food traders in a city car park. It is noisy, friendly and a little chaotic, and its old posters were small, polite and easy to miss.
We created a campaign system of posters, banners, social graphics, tote bags and trader signage that turns the market's character into something you notice from across the street.
Challenge
The market competes with supermarkets that spend far more on advertising. The campaign had to cut through with very little budget, mostly through posters, word of mouth and what people carried home.
Dozens of traders also needed to use the system themselves, from chalkboard signs to their own social posts. It had to be simple enough to use without a designer in the room.
Creative approach
- 01
Type you can read from a bus
The campaign is built on a heavy, slightly irregular display face set enormous. Every poster carries one short line, such as 'Sundays taste better here', and the day and time, nothing else.
- 02
Real produce, shot like heroes
Photography treats a pile of tomatoes or a loaf of bread with the same care as a fashion shoot: bold crops, hard light and saturated colour. Only real stall produce, photographed on market day.
- 03
A kit for traders
Traders get a simple pack: sign templates, a price-card system and stickers. Each uses the campaign type and colour so the whole market looks connected even when it is made by thirty different people.
- 04
The tote as media
A sturdy canvas tote, printed with the day and the market's name, became the most visible part of the campaign: carried through the city every week by the people who already love it.
